I've been making Amish Bread using this recipe from TammysRecipes
quite often lately. I let my bread machine do most of the work. I put the ingredients in the machine, then set it to "dough only' setting. My bread maker mixes and kneads the dough. After the first rising, I take the dough out of the machine, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a bread pan for the final rising. I then pop it in my oven to bake. The whole house smells wonderful while it is baking. My family loves to eat this bread, and I rarely have any left the next day. If you have a bread maker I recommend that you pull it out and start using it again! Fresh whole wheat bread costs about .50 a loaf to make at home! I use half whole wheat and half bread flour.
Amish Bread
An easy, basic homemade bread
Yield: 1 loaf
Ingredients:
1 cup warm water (110-115 degrees F)
1/3 cup sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons oil
3 cups flour*
1 tablespoon dry yeast
Instructions:
1. Dissolve sugar in water, then stir in yeast. Allow to stand until yeast forms a creamy foam (about 15 minutes). Put into bread machine pan and add oil. Swish around to mix them together.
2. Add flour on top, and salt on top of the flour. Set machine to dough setting and start.**
3. When dough is made and has risen the first time (the bread machine should beep to tell you when the dough setting is complete), take it out of the bread machine pan and work it lightly in your hands to get the air bubbles out (I don't put it on a floured board for this but you can if you like).
4. Form into a loaf and put in a greased loaf pan. Cover and let rise in a warm place about 30-45 minutes, until almost doubled in size.
5. Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes, or until done. If loaf is browning too quickly, cover top loosely with foil. When bread is finished, take it out of the oven and allow it to set for 5 minutes. Remove from pan, place on wire rack, and cover until loaf is cool.

mmm. i love homemade bread. my mom never really makes it but i had some friends who were taking a cooking class so every monday night they would come home with lots of baked goods.
Grandma used to make bread when she had a chance, she learned how from Grandmother Griffith. If you have a bread maker lying around your house pull it out and try this.
If you make bread often I can tell you where to get the best price on yeast.
I know that you can easily learn how to make this yourself, Rachel!
I have it raising in the bread pan right now, with some lentil soup simmering on the stove. I think we'll enjoy this meal.
i want to give this a try. do you equally half the two flours? is this bread good for sandwiches or just dinner bread? thanks.
Yes, I usually equally halve the flour, although I have also prepared this recipe with all white flour.
I use bread flour when I have it.
I've made toasted cheese sandwiches with this bread. It holds up pretty well, I think.
I hope you enjoy it!
I made this today using all white flour. It was absolutely delicious! Thanks!
